The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the professional association for qualified social workers in Australia, and the authority nominated by the Australian Government to assess overseas social work qualifications for skilled migration purposes.
The assessment exists to verify that an internationally-qualified social worker's education is comparable to the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS), before it can be relied on for migration purposes.
AASW assesses holders of overseas Bachelor or Master of Social Work qualifications, as well as international students who completed an AASW-accredited social work program in Australia.
A positive skills assessment is a mandatory eligibility requirement for most General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa subclasses in the Social Worker occupation. Without it, an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect cannot be validly submitted.
AASW's Migration & Eligibility Assessment (MEA) Team evaluates overseas qualifications for migration purposes, and separately for AASW membership eligibility for employment — the two serve different purposes, though most migrants complete the migration assessment first.

AASW's process centres on a core qualification assessment, with optional add-ons available for those wanting to claim additional migration points.
English Language: AASW only accepts IELTS Academic. You need an overall score of 7.0 with no band below 7.0 (or, if combining two sittings within six months, 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component across both sittings, with no band under 6.5). Since 20 May 2026, the IELTS Academic One Skill Retake is also accepted, taken within 60 days of your original test and within 12 months of your AASW application.
Overseas Qualifications: Your qualification must be a dedicated, recognised professional social work degree in the country where it was obtained — not a general social sciences, psychology, or community development qualification.
Field Education: A minimum of approximately 1000 hours of supervised field education is required, completed across at least two placements in different academic years, covering contrasting practice areas, with at least one placement in direct practice.
Recent Graduates: International students who completed an AASW-accredited social work course in Australia can apply directly for a migration skills assessment, generally with faster processing than fully overseas qualifications.
Priority Processing: AASW will only consider priority assessment requests from employers recruiting an internationally-trained social worker who has already lodged an application — individual applicants cannot request priority processing for personal migration timelines.

Your qualification, institution, and field education record are reviewed to confirm your degree is a dedicated, AASW-recognised social work qualification.
Certified degree certificates, transcripts, and official field education documentation are compiled, along with your IELTS Academic result.
The assessment application is lodged through AASW’s online portal, along with the applicable fee — including any optional Skilled Employment or Doctorate assessments you wish to add.
Once your application is deemed complete, it is marked ‘pending assessment’ and enters the processing queue managed by AASW’s Migration & Eligibility Assessment (MEA) Team.
AASW reviews your qualification against ASWEAS criteria, verifying details with your institution directly where needed.
AASW may request clarifications or further evidence; timely and accurate responses are critical to avoid delays.
A positive or negative outcome letter is issued via the portal, usable for your visa application and/or AASW membership eligibility.

AASW's published guidance is to allow 12–16 weeks for international qualifications from the date an application is deemed ready for assessment. AASW-accredited Australian qualification holders are generally processed faster, in around 4–5 weeks. Applications that include an optional Skilled Employment Assessment may take longer.
