The Canadian Experience Class is the Express Entry stream for candidates who have already worked in Canada in a skilled occupation. It is the natural route for post-graduation work permit holders and temporary skilled workers converting their Canadian experience into permanent residence.

What counts as qualifying experience
- Skilled work performed in Canada with authorisation to work
- Experience gained in an eligible NOC 2021 TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation
- Paid employment — volunteering and unpaid internships do not count
- Experience gained within the qualifying period before you apply, as defined by IRCC
- Self-employment in Canada is generally excluded from this stream

Minimum language requirements differ according to the TEER category of your Canadian experience. IRCC publishes the applicable benchmarks, and meeting the minimum is only the eligibility floor — higher bands materially improve your ranking.
The process

Target the band that both clears the benchmark and adds the most CRS points, including French where it is realistic.
Express Entry profile

Draw monitoring and PNP
Monitor CEC and all-program draws, and pursue a provincial nomination where your occupation and province align.
ITA to Confirmation of PR
Submit the full electronic application with medicals, police certificates and biometrics, then respond to IRCC requests promptly.
Costs & government fees
- IRCC processing fees and the Right of Permanent Residence Fee apply per adult applicant, with a separate fee for dependent children.
- Biometrics fees apply as set by IRCC.
- Language testing, translations, medical examinations and police certificates are paid to the relevant providers.
- No settlement funds are required for CEC, though other costs of relocation still apply. Confirm current fees with IRCC.

No. Study is not work experience, though it can contribute separately under Canadian study and adaptability factors. Only authorised paid skilled work counts for CEC.
The Canadian Experience Class does not require proof of funds, unlike the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
You may apply from outside Canada provided your qualifying Canadian work experience falls within the period IRCC specifies. Confirm the current window on the IRCC website.
Self-employed experience is generally not counted towards CEC eligibility.
Permit expiry does not automatically remove you from the pool, but it affects your ability to remain and work in Canada. Bridging options should be reviewed well before expiry.
